What is the best Anti-Virus Software That I never have to pay for and that I can use all the time?

Virus Removal Spyware Add comments

I’m looking for free anti-virus software, not a trial version for my computer. What is the best one?

The highest rated (as in ability to detect viruses) free AVs are Avira and Comodo. AVG did not do so well in the tests.

    AVG Antivirus (Free version)

Spybot and AdAware are not Antivirus tools. They are spyware tools.

    AVG Free, available at http://download.com
Also, since it does not include a security program (for spyware) I recommend that you get both Skybot Seek&Destroy and Ad-aware SE Personal (both free at the same site).
While the AVG runs all the time, you have to manual run the spyware programs about once a week. Since they use different list to determine what is spyware, recommend that alternate which you run each week.

There re four excellent antivirus programs on the market. I have been using AVG free edition since 2003 and have not had a virus on any of my 13 computer. All of which are online 3 to 10 hours a day.
I use it in conjunction with several other security techniques.
    Antispyware
    Software and Hardware firewall
    Routine online scans
Keep my OS (XP Pro) updated

I like AOL Active Virus Shield. Don’t let the name AOL fool you. Active Virus Shield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, Active Virus Shield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
    Full test chart is here:
    http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82

Active Virus Shield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb ram)

Active Virus Shield detects and removes spyware, also.

And it updates up to 15 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.

Good stuff, free for everyone from:
